Principal's Fall Newsletter 2016
The school year has taken off and students are in full swing to school routines. As in the past, each year brings change: change in faculty, office staff and curriculum.
At OLC, we strive to keep our curriculum updated, using best instructional practices. This year, we purchased a new science curriculum in grades K-5. Grades 6-8 textbooks were updated in the 2015-16 school year. These changes came about when the Archdiocese of Newark announced changes in the curriculum mapping for science. The new program focuses on STEM and also has an online component for the students to access at home. Also new this year is the world language program. Rosetta Stone is dedicated to changing people's lives through the power of language and literacy education. Their innovative, personalized language and reading programs drive positive learning outcomes in thousands of schools, businesses, and government organizations. This year, students are taking:
- K-2nd are taking Spanish
- 3rd -5th had an option to take French/Spanish
- 6th-8th had an option of taking Chinese (Mandarin), Spanish, French, Italian, and one student taking Latin.
We also continue the work with our reading and math consultants that have been with us over the past eight years. Teachers have had professional development sessions in both areas and
As you know, at the start of school, you were informed that Ms. McKethan was gravely ill and passed away. We were all saddened by her loss and remember her each day, as she touched the lives of so many. Those of us that had the privilege to work with her experienced her quiet, yet brilliant spirit.
Ms. McKethan came to OLC eleven years ago, where she began teaching at the preschool level. She enriched the lives of preschool children each day and then began teaching kindergarten four years ago.
